Allergy to sodium?
Is it possible to be allergic to sodium? Our son, Bryson, had an allergic reaction to Singular and the nurses at the office thought I was crazy until we tried again. Well, a few nights ago he tried microwave popcorn for the first time. Of course, I was nervous about the kernels but when your child is almost 28 months old and still in Stage 3 foods, you just sit and watch closely. I was so excited that he was trying something new. I immediately checked for peanut ingredients and there were none. Well, the next day, it began! He had 2 loose stools with mucous and real fussy that night. Yesterday, he was screaming that his butt hurt and wanted to be changed constantly. I turned him over and noticed the small, red bumps all over his butt cheeks. Poor thing! He was miserable! Thank God for Benadryl. Has anyone ever heard of someone being allergic to sodium? I know the main ingredient in Singular is monokulast(?) sodium. There is no salt in baby foods that he eats. Things that make you go hmmm.....

Daughter (6) GERD, Heart Murmur, Food Allergy, Asthma, Mold allergy
No ~ sodium is a mineral. There are other ingredients in iodized salt. What other ingredients are in the microwave popcorn? Also, Singulair has ingredients - active and inactive, colors, flavors, etc. All of those are much more suspect than sodium.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I assume your popcorn has only salt, corn and palm oil? Are you absolutrely sur ehe has no allergy to corn or palm oil? My son is off all foods and I wanted to give him something to help him work on his pincher grasp that he couldn't rub into his eyes (a BIG problem for us...his eyes itch constantly becauseof his allergies. This does not bode well for our dog)...so I gave him popcorn to play with (he doesn't put anything edible in his mouth...it's like he knows!). He was 100% fine that day but the next day, he had a very faint but head-to-toe rash on him. I don't know WHY, but no more popcorn fun for him. I would think that his problems would be with the other ingredients before the salt....good luck! Hope he feels better soon!

my dd does not do well with corn it causes a rash and diarehea for her. i might lean more towards the corn being the culprit in that case and something totally different in sigular causing the other reaction. you never know where links between allergies and foods are though!

My vote would be corn allergy or palm oil allergy. I'm so sorry! You cannot be allergic to sodium and live. Cristy

I would agree that corn sounds to be the culprit. My dh didn't allergy test positive for corn but it gives him a raging headache if he eats it. What was your sons reaction to the Singular? My family can't take Benadryl because it doesn't make them drowsy but makes them so wired they can't sleep. I had to take it for a rash my last month of pregnancy and instead of making my daughter drowsy she would go crazy inside of me. I took it ONCE while breastfeeding and she screamed for hours until it was out of her system.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I am not sure if it is an allergy to corn as he eats corn in baby food. He regularly eats Green Beans, Rice, and Corn by Beechnut. He has also eaten Sweet Corn Casserole. He had allergy testing at 16 months of age, and the only positive was peanuts. I realize that allergy testing is not accurate until over 2 years of age. I have not seen the label on the popcorn to know all of the oils in the bag, but our neighbor is keeping it for me. We are scheduled to see the allergist on the 29th. His reaction to Singular was a severe body rash on his torso and legs that itched terribly. It took about 5 days before it appeared and it was awful. On the second attempt, he broke out in a diaper rash within a few hours of taking the first dose so I did not give him another the next day. The nurse agreed. This afternoon his eczema is beginning to break out, which could also be related to the temp and humidity in the South. Who knows if it is linked to the allergy or not. Thanks for helping.

Oh, it was butter popcorn. We no longer have issues with milk or soy. However, I do not think he has ever had butter.
Check with your
doctor first!
