Allergy appointment what to expect?
Nate had an appointment with gi today and we have an appointment set up for 7/30/08. When I call to set up the appointment they told me he would need to be off all refulx meds for two days prior. Has any one had to do this for allergy testing? Also just wondering what other kiddos doses are for the reflux meds. The doc upped his prevacid to 30mg a day at night and 5ml zantac in the morning. I told her I did not want to keep upping his meds with out further testing, we are waiting for a date for a scope, swollow test, and poss ph probe. While we were there nate had one of his usually coughing/choking spells and the dr was worried about it. I of course had been thinking he was clearing his throat from the reflux. Good appointment I feel like we are getting an action plan going. I feel really bad because I am to stop all solids. Nate really wants to eat when we do, If I offer him a bottle he throws it. He really wants his food. These days all solids are hurting his tummy :(

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Hi! http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html is a website that will help with med dosing.

According to it, he should get 1-1.25mg per 2.2lbs. I don't know how much he weighs......That sight is a good guideline to follow.

That is sad about the solids. I know how much Mags always has wanted to eat with us. Good luck with that :)

Bryson (3/06), former Neocate, Nexium, and Reglan baby. Diagnosed with peanut allergy and asthma. Weaned from meds in Spring 0f 08. Brother, Parker (6/04), was also on Prevacid and Pregestimil (formula) as an infant.
Hmmm, not sure why he has to stop reflux meds for allergy testing. The only thing we were told to stop giving our son for 3 days prior to testing was antihistamines.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
Reflux meds are in a sense "antihistimines" which is why you have to stop them 3 days prior to allergy testing. you can give Mylanta in place of them. call your pedi or pedi GI for dosing information. Mine was tested 2 weeks ago and did 'okay' with mylanta. coy is tiny and i gave him 1 tsp a day.

solids are worse for my kiddo too. most days all he'll eat is cherrios. a lot of other foods upset/worsen his reflux. i'm sick of doctors saying that solids will make reflux better. myabe in some cases but certainly not ours ( nor for some others on this forum) how old is Nate now? what kind of testing? our patch testing was a waste of time.

they are doing the patch test along with a blood 48 hour delayed food reaction test. Nate is 7 months and 23lb. When I asked about the patch test my gi told me that the kind of patch test Nate is getting is very reliable, it's a "NEW" form of patch testing and along with the 48/72 hour delayed reaction test we will get very good idea of what is going on. Now I don't know if that is a load of crap but I will go along with it for now.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Hi. We are seeing allergist #3 on Tuesday, and not one has asked us to stop reflux meds. Can you double-check to be sure if you need to stop Prevacid? I would ask to speak or at least one of the nurses...and avoid the receptionist, who might not be 100 percent sure. No sense in making the poor kid suffer if there is a tiny chance he won't need to!

We have not had patch (although I don't see how skin would matter) or a delayed reactiion blood test (just regular RAST tests twice), so maybe that makes a difference in the med stoppage? Oh - Sebastian is on 15 mg of Prevacid 2x per day. He is 9.5 months and at his 9-month appt, he was 31 inches and 24 pounds. HTH

maybe its just with the patch test since a histamine injection is the "control" site.

Jodi, first time mom to baby Mason born at 28 weeks 12-10-07. He has GERD, DGE, MSPI, ?food allergies, and hypotonia (starts PT end of July). On Neocate (thickened with Simply Thick) and on prevacid and EES. Home apnea/bradycardia monitor d/c'd finally at 7 months!
Mason reacted to rice cereal and then to sweet potatoes and is seeing allergy for the first time this week. They said he had to stop all antihistamines including zantac (which he is not on) but he is on prevacid and they did not tell me to stop that?
Check with your
doctor first!
