LORD HELP ME! I'M GONNA GO NUTS
Yes, it's me and I don't know what to think. This post isn't about anything new exactly. Most of you know that Maggie has NEVER been a good car rider. At times she's tolerable but for the most part, I dread getting in the car with her.

I decided to take the girls shoe shopping this morning. We wound up at the mall. It's 30mins away. We were at the mall maybe an hour or so. Maggie screamed uncontrollably-at the top of her lungs-bloody murder-90% of the time we were gone. I paid $8 for a magna-doodle thing so maybe she'd shut up on the way home. It helped for a while. That was the 10% of the time she wasn't screaming.

My problem is this----is this a medical issue that I should be looking into? Is this just Maggie? Is she really that bad? Am I ever gonna be able to leave the house with her and have a decent time? I mean, I was gonna try to do some school shopping with Morgan but there was no freakin way I was gonna attempt that.

I am so mad, angry, upset, all kinds of stuff right now. I mean I took her out of the car and she grabbed me so tight, like she hadn't held me in days. She was perfectly happy then. No tears after I took her out of the car.

And I will also say that she was doing this funny throat gurgle or gulp thing, but I think it was because she was crying so much.

Naturally, teething is a possibility since she is right at 19mos and still only has 8 teeth. I know once I said she had 10 but the two new ones disappeared and haven't came back yet.

I just don't know when she's ever gonna get used to the car and if it's a medical issue.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
i remember reading somewhere that cars can just be too much for kids to handle. there is just soo much stuff going on so fast that they can not process it all. i think it was classified as a sensory thing. i think another cause could be something with the ears- but i can't remember correctly. but i would definitely ask a pedi about it to be on the safe side.

Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
Well...I will say this: Both my (diagnosed) refluxers got terribly car sick every time we got in the car when their reflux wasn't under control! Seriously, last winter before the Prevacid started working, Isaiah would complain horribly every time we drove anywhere. He'd be feeling like he was going to barf after only a few blocks, and wouldn't feel better until quite some time after he got out. One of Sarah's symptoms was that she would vomit all over the place in the car on any longer drive, especially if she'd eaten within a hour or so (boy was that fun! No warning, just a car full of vomit). Anyway, has she been having any other symptoms? Been grouchy a lot lately? Eating funny? I hate to go there but for us the car sick thing really did seem to go along with reflux.

Mom to
Son (10) GERD(aspiration pneumonias, apnea, tracheomalacia), Food allergy, Asthma
Daughter (6) GERD, Heart Murmur, Food Allergy, Asthma, Mold allergy
I agree w/ the others. Could be sensory. Also, one of mine gets car sick if we are in the car longer than 1 hour. Loads of fun. It is reflux related. Does better if we time the car trip to right after med dose (Nexium), or takes Tums, etc. Ugh.

Well, when we knew she was still having reflux issues, it didn't matter when we went anywhere and it still doesn't. Hungry or not, tired or not, whatever it doesn't matter.

She hasn't shown any other reflux signs but she is always fussy. ALWAYS!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Ugh. That sucks. Driving with a screaming child is pretty much unbearable, and I feel bad that you have to deal with it every time you cart Maggie around. I have no idea what it is. Does she get pissed off about being harnessed in? I know I get carsick when I ride in the back seat...maybe that happens to her? Maybe she is mad that she can't really see you (I mean, she can, but she can't, you know?)?? I'll ask my sister if she has any theories. She is one of those paranoid moms that researches everything in the world on the internet and actually comes up with GREAT info. I'm sorry you have deal with the the rides of terror.

thanks Melissa. Those are all def. possibilities. It's just absolutely the most aggravating thing I've ever had to deal with. Luckily when I start work, we won't be going much. There's the silver lining, lol.

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
My first thought was carsickness as well - she may just start feeling awful as soon as you pull out. I don't know what you could do to help with that - Dramamine is out due to her age. Could you ask the pedi if you have any options?

Is there any possibility that it is because she's bored? I know Halley shrieks if we don't have the DVD player going in the car.

Honestly, I've come to the conclusion that it's probably MAGGIE-ITIS. LOL I just think she doesn't like being strapped down.

katiesmommy
Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
Did she cry when she faced backwards? I agree it can be a car sick thing if she is looking out the side window as I get car sick that way. Katie likes her car seat and likes to have firm pressure. On days that her reflux is bad she likes to have her whole body weight on her chest and happily goes for a ride on those days so I can't help you there but symphasize with the baby crying all day thing. I can count the number of days that Katie has been a "good baby". Could it be a temperature thing? Air conditioner? World flying by too fast? I know you don't know but throwing out ideas of what is different about the car.

Bryson (3/06), former Neocate, Nexium, and Reglan baby. Diagnosed with peanut allergy and asthma. Weaned from meds in Spring 0f 08. Brother, Parker (6/04), was also on Prevacid and Pregestimil (formula) as an infant.
This may sound silly to you, but do you think she could be having a panic attack. Is it a possibility that maybe she feels out of control and in to tight of a place. I know that if a car is crowded I sometimes get panicky and scream inside my head. Could she be claustrophobic? Just a thought! Maybe it is a crazy one,but wanted to mention it. I hope you can get some answers at your appt.

Seamus was born 7/6/07, one month early with Silent Reflux. Zantac since 3 weeks old, currently taking herbs and probiotics.
Golly, I hear ya. Seamus finally chills out a little bit more car now that his carseat faces forward. Given her age, she is probably forward too. I agree with Kathryn about the sensory overload.Im sorry your day was so nuts!

Bryson's mom- I don't know but I know when she clamped onto me getting out of the car, it was weird. She doesn't always do that. But this time, she was really crying and then when I got her out, she was fine. I just don't know. I figure the ped will just brush me off, but I'd love to know what's causing this.

Well, I can actually feel the outline of 4 molars in Maggie's mouth. Just under the gums. I imagine that might be part of her problem. I am gonna consider giving her some tylenol if she's a monster tomorrow! Poor thing...she came to me with her blankie and just laid on me and held it. How pitiful! Maybe that's it.

Aurora born March 17, 2007
3 years, 8 months old
Weighs 25.8 lbs
8 lbs 11 oz at birth.
Recovered Chronic Projectile Vomiter
Prevacid Free since September 08
Egg allergy diagnosed Jan 26/09
Has a Pectus Excavatum
Has an Epipen
Melissa, I honestly think it's those dang molars!! Rory has 2 molars, one all the way through and one coming.....and honestly, she has been a monster lately, very irritable and whiny, which is not like her at all. I also think the personality is developing as well, she has total attitude, but then she is also way more cuddly than she used to be. I just bet you it's her teeth. We never had problems with teeth, but Ror's been yarfing since the molars have poked through, and her personality has changed. Also, at this age, they are so curious, and I bet she's a bit put off by being restrained in the car. :) Do you play music in the car? Depending on what she likes, that might help calm her. Mike likes to play pink floyd and ozzy on our road trips. Rory's used to it now, and if we don't have music on, she gets fussy. We found out she liked it one day when she was screaming and Mike tried to drown her out, LOL. She stopped crying (probably traumatized), and drifted off to sleep. :) Mags might like some country or some kiddie tunes maybe. Have you tried rolling the windows down and letting in some breeze? Rory loves the wind. Just tossing out ideas. :) Sorry you had a crappy day with Mags. I bet she's just feeling irritable.

Thanks Michelle. She loves country, Kenny C. of course, lol. She doesn't like the kid's music as much as Morgan did, but that was all we ever let Morgan listen to. That poor child let a very restricted existence. Any way, I'm thinking teeth. I gave her some tylenol a while ago. She woke up once at 4 screaming and then she was fussy when she got up this morning. I feel bad for her, but man when she's crying it gets on my nerves :)

mom to Mila 2-20-2007
and Robby 4-22-2004
Mila is on Peptamen JR 30 cal by NG tube. Open Heart Surgery 2/08/08. Captopril, Zantac, Losec, Lasix.
Mila's a carseat screamer too... I think she's screaming to keep herself awake. It is very possibly the most annoying and distracting thing in the entire world. Sorry to hear you're going through it too!

Well, that's another possibility, Sarah. She doesn't like sleeping in the car and she puts it off as much as possible. She never sleeps more than 20mins even on a long trip during nap time.

This probably isn't it....
but have you made sure there is nothing in her carseat that is hurting her. My son did the same thing and when I ran my hand along the back of the carseat there was a part that stuck out and pushed on his back. I actually noticed it after taking him out of the car when he didn't have a shirt on and there was a large red spot across his back. It might not be it but thought I would mention it.

Hey, anything's possible at this point, but it's looking like it's probably---brattiness, teething, or not wanting to go to sleep. I have it narrowed down to those.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
two times coyle has screamed for over an hour straight while driving. once on the way home from my mothers and once on the way home from my friends. one was 45 minutes the other 1 hr. 15. and i mean, the entire time. i pulled over on both trips but the 2nd i got him back in the car seat he screamed again. 2 days l8r on both occasions-a tooth! so, my bet is the teeth.

Maia was like this until we turned her carseat around the day that she turned 1 year old. She was a very big baby, so she met the weight requirement for turning the seat easily at 1 year. Anyways, she was just fussy, fussy, fussy all the time until just after 2 years-old. As soon as she was done teething (25 months) and started to talk, she turned a corner. She's 2.5 now and she's just a different kid. One other thing...we're PSYCHO about her schedule. We plan everything around naptime and bedtime, and this NEVER VARIES. We turn down invites if they conflict with naptime or bedtime, we leave Disneyworld to go back to the hotel so we can make naptime on time, etc. All mealtimes are also completely fixed. This has made a HUGE difference in Maia's behavior. We used to say that she was just being Maia too, but honestly being overtired, underscheduled, etc. was a big part of it for her.
Check with your
doctor first!
