Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Moms who have babies w/ allergies
Keira is now on Children's Zyrtec. She's been having sore throats due to post nasal drip, red eyes from rubbing them to death and sneezing. The doc said it's not pink eye-it's allergy related. She's now on Zyrtec every day. I guess it's ok for her to start that this young. :( Poor kid. And it makes her drowsy too. Anyone else have a child on allergy meds? I think I'll start giving it to her at night as it's suppose to work for a full 24 hours and it makes her tired. I would take her to the allergists I worked for but I'm not sure if she's too young for that just yet.

and Robby 4-22-2004
Mila is on Peptamen JR 30 cal by NG tube. Open Heart Surgery 2/08/08. Captopril, Zantac, Losec, Lasix.
Go ahead and take ehr to the allergist - some allergists WILL test a kid this young - and some won't. The current " hip " philosophy is that if the child is old enough to have symptoms, they are old enough for testing. Not that any kind of testing will show every allergy ( for example, i've never had a positive prick test for strawberries but I am nearly anaphalactic to them ).

My son was on Zyrtec too - grape flavoured. The sleepiness wore off after a week or two. Does she mind the taste?

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Halley is on Zyrtec as well. Honestly, I haven't seen a huge improvement on it, but we're going to try it for a little while longer. We've decided to try to split the dose (with the pedi's ok) to see if it makes a difference. The sleepiness is really common - we try to give it before nap time and at night.

She doesn't care for the flavor. I tried it myself as you can take the same thing and I have allergies. It was kinda nasty. I'll probably take her in to see the docs I worked for. It can't hurt and I have to wonder if she's allergic to the dog. :(

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Jedd takes liquid generic Calritan and it doens't cause him to be drowsy. He hasn't had any side affects form it. I buy the Walgreen's brand. He takes it for seasonal allergies. He didn't get tested. Because the Benedryl was making the sym, ptoms go away the ped decided to let me try the Clariten, it worked great!!!!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
We had Sebastian tested at 10.5 weeks, 5 months, and six months, and his list of allergies is a mile long. Keira is NOT too young. Just ask for RAST (blood) testing and not the crappy skin test. Sebastian tested negative for nearly everything on that test. We gave him Alimentum as our initial idiot allergist suggested after that test (had been on Neocate), and he was sick for WEEKS (his dairy allergy is very severe).

We tried Zyrtec, but all four times we gave it to Bassy, he had terrible paradoxical reactions....he got hyper, irritable, MAD...he screamed and screamed and screamed for HOURS, and it sucked. Same thing goes for Benadryl. We have to avoid that class of meds altogether and stick to Singulair instead.

A HUGe (like 60 or 80 percent) of kids who are on Zyrtec for a few years and who are genetically susceptibly to asthma DID NOT DEVELOP it...the Syrtec is believed to be preventative. SO give her th eZyrtec if she can handle it. I wish my son could.

DS #1 (7/05) - Just ReDX'd Refluxer! Prevacid Solutab starting 4/8/09. Lots of food and environmental allergies. Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Speech Delays, Developmental Delays, Severe Muscle Tone Weakness.
DS #2 (1/08) ReDX'd refluxer. Milk and soy allergies with Soy Lecithin allergies. Oat milk drinker, Rice protein powder, DHA, and vitamins added for bulk and needed nutrition. Weak muscle tone, slightly developmentally delayed, SPD confirmed.
We use Extendryl with much better results and no sleepiness. You might ask her about it. My doctor tested my son early, but honestly it was a waste. Before 3 there are way too many false negatives. He came up negative to cats and he's a fast reactor to them. So we knew we had false negatives right there. But if they are severe enough, it wouldn't hurt to try.

Liz, mom to Donnie 12/2005
Surgery for Pyloric Stenosis at 5 weeks old
GERD since 4 weeks old
Colic until 13 weeks old
Delayed Gastric Emptying
MSPI
Surgery for Tubes and Adenoidectomy at 14 months old
Anemic since 9 month check
Febrile Seizures
Speech Therapy
MEDS: Zyrtec, Nasonex, Xopenex,
Vitamins with iron, and back on Prevacid as of 12/2008
Donnie has terrible year-round allergies and he takes Zyrtec (started on it before he turned a year old) and he also does Nasonex at night and if he is having a really bad day, lots of sneezing, runny nose etc. our ped has us give him a dose of benadryl at bed. Donnie is also doing pataday allergy eye drops. We haven't taken Donnie to an allergist, his ped has been handling it, but I think we will eventually end up there because his allergies are terrible. Good luck, I hope the Zyrtec helps! -Liz

We use Zyrtec too. We tried Claritin for a while but it did not work as well for the girls as the zyrtec does. I have not had ours allergy tested but they need to be. I am wishing I had done it earlier to be honest. I think it is important to have some idea of what they are allergic to and especially if the medicines don't help. (Just my opinion after lots of trial and error mistakes). Be prepared to have to have her retested when she gets older like Melissa said. I will be hoping the meds give her some good relief!!

I just stopped giving Ozzie the Zyrtec to see if he still needs it. We gave 2ml at bedtime each night and it did knock him out. It is synergistic, though, and didn't show full effect for about a week for us. GL!!
