Katie's Ears, ENT update
Well, we just got back from seeing the ENT and he looked in K's ears and said the same thing that every other dr. says. Her ears are clear. He kept bringing up ear infections and I said I don't think it is an ear infection but that she has fluid in her middle ear because I do too right now. We live in Nor. California and there are over 500 fires right now with a HUGE one an hours drive away so our air is horrible; looks like it is going to storm any minute but it is smoke. When I told him that my ears get uncomfortable when there is fluid there he laughed and said that there is a huge difference between baby and adult ears. Uh, yeah! One would think the tubes that drain fluid in an adult's ears would be bigger and better able to drain fluid as you don't often hear of adults getting tubes in their ears! As bad as this sounds I am glad that she stopped gaining weight because then they had to take me seriously that she wasn't getting better and had to actually do something!!!! I can't imagine what you guys go through with babies who eat to soothe and therefore gain weight; how do you convince them that there is something wrong? Hopefully she will continue to take a bottle like she has been doing the past few days because it has helped her not feel so bad. I can't believe that I "wasted" a good day with her by going to the drs., they are so few and far between that I try to cherish every moment and we wasted an hour and a half of that good day. I'm done ranting now, thanks for listening! Hugs to you all who deal with babies/kids who have spent most of their little lives in pain. I'm glad that I have you all!

Darn it! I was really hoping that you'd get some answers at the ENT. I'm sorry it was such a frustrating day. I haven't gotten a chance to tell you yet, but that picture of her is DARLING!!!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Hi Katie's Mom. God, that must be so frustrating. I'm really sorry. I was hoping it was the ears. Looks like our kids are huge mysteries yet again. I really hope you get an answer soon. That sucks about the smoke, too. When we were on vacation in the Outer Banks in early June, we had ot leave early because of the smoke. It was bugging Sebastian BIG TIME. I feel bad that you all have to live in it right now. Could that be bothering her?

Hi Melissa! Yes, I do think that the smoke is bothering her because it does bother me. I have fluid in my middle ear and have had to be put on Rx decongestants to drain the fluid and when I said that to the ENT he just kind of acted like I am one of those people who want to pump my child full of medicine to make her sleep. Here's the thing: she sleeps about 18 hours a day! I keep telling them she is sleeping to avoid the pain and they all (except her GI) act like I give her Tylenol PM and the minute they can't find anything are done with me (which it sounds like you know the feeling!).
Check with your
doctor first!
