Type 4 non-igE allergies? Help
Hi there, Melissa, mommy to Sebastian told me to ask the allergist about Type 4 non- igE allergies and I had to look it up and only found 3 types; what is the fourth type? Thanks for your help!! Although we have dealt with her reflux since she was weeks old we have recently discovered that it wasn't as controlled as we thought (ok, hoped was more like it) and so now we are playing catch up so I love this forum! Not only am I not alone in dealing with this anymore but I can ask questions!!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Hi there. Yay for you doing your research! It's the only wya most of us have kept our kids safe, I think!!

Basically, a type 4 allergy is an allergy of the GI tract. It doesn't show up on the traditional tests because it is not an immune response. It causes a delayed reaction (anywhere from 2 hours to 3 weeks!) and results in a boatload of symptoms, ranging from diarrhea, vomiting, and increased reflux to nightwaking, screaming, etc, etc. Sebastian's worst was to bananas, but that was a tricky one. He has oral allergy syndrome (OAS - ask about that one, too. Actually, you can find some good info on a site I normally loathe: Wikipedia) as well as a type 4 allergy, so he got mouth swelling and hives as he ate and then had horrendous diarrhea and vomiting for a full week afterwards. This is our new allergist's site: http://www.drrobertwood.com/. You can find some good info about Type 4/non-ige mediated allergies there. Hope this helps!!!

Thank you for the help!!! I just want to give you both a big hug for all of the discomfort that he goes through! Poor little guy! I do have to say that every single baby that I have seen on this site is exceptionally cute and I don't think all babies are cute. I too have dressed like Katie on some days. :) As for the type 4 I do know that she reacts to peaches and rice badly. Rice makes her refux more and peaches are the (imo) the reason that we are now at this juncture with her refux. She reacted badly immediately the first time with screaming and refusal to eat but we thought it might have just been coincidence and didn't give them to her until a month later while she was having a good week. By week end I had stopped giving them to her and we increased her Zantac in the hopes of getting it back to manageable levels.....no such luck. The zantac was giving her headaches and she was back to throwing up everything that she ate and then refusing to eat because she knew it would make her throw up. If it weren't for feeding her at night I don't think she would have had anything to eat that whole week. I am praying that she is not allergic to pears or bananas or I don't know how I would get her to eat! I have to lace her formula with bananas and pears otherwise she will not eat it at all! Waiting for the allergist appt. to completely stop breastfeeding as I do believe my diet is greatly affecting her and I don't think I will do well emotionally eliminating more from my diet. Hoping to get more answers from the allergist and her upper GI is scheduled next week. Thanks so much for the information and hugs and prayers for you guys!!!!
