Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Calling all Nexium babies
Hello! I am going to inquire about switching to Nexium since Sebastian has basically seemed unmedicated for weeks now. I tried to google it and do a bit of research on my own, but I cannot find how it is administered to babies. Can it be put in a bottle, or must be given with food? Do you need to give it well before a meal like Prevacid? Thanks very much!

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
Lanymama is the only one I can think of who's got a lo on Nexium and since she had her new baby I haven't seen her on much, understandably. Kat is always a wealth of info though, hopefully she'll check in later! Did you try marcikids? I have never had to use it much, but it seems to give a lot of answers people need. Sorry I am not much help here!

Kelly, mom of two boys with GERD. John (born 11/03) was on 40mg Nexium til 15 mos old. Second son Brian (born 05/07) started on Zantac. Now on 22.5 mg Prevacid Solutabs plus Carafate 0.5 ml 1 x day
My older son John was on Nexium from 4 months of age until about 15 months of age. He was on 40 mg a day which is a high dose. I think you'd prob start at 20 mg a day. John's was split into 3 daily doses, morning, afternoon and evening. We bought the Nexium capsules which are filled with tiny beads. Each day we opened the capsule (very easy to do, the pharmacist can show you) and we measured out approx a third of the beads for each dose. We put a little baby applesauce on a baby spoon and then spinkled the beads onto it and fed it to him. You can probably use pureed pears on the spoon instead of applesauce but I would ask about that to be sure. You don't have to make yourself crazy measuring exactly 1/3 or 1/2 of the beads, just eyeball it. I think there is also a powder form that you can mix with water but for us using the capsules was super easy. When we started, John wasn't even on solids yet but he did totally fine taking it off the spoon with the applesauce. John did really well with Nexium. He is now 4 and has no issues with reflux at all and is a great eater. When he was a baby and on the meds, I would tell people what meds and dose he was on and they would say all sorts of stuff about how crazy we were to have him on that high a dose of meds and it did scare me but he did really well on Nexium whereas before he was really suffering so for us we felt it was the right choice. Brian, my second son, is on Prevacid and he did well enough on it that we didn't switch to Nexium but if he hadn't done well with Prevacid, the GI (a different one that my older ds had) would def have switched him to Nexium. Hope that helps!

nexium has been our godsend. Emma is on 40 mg per day - half given in morning and half in evening. technically you are supposed to give prior to eating but we have had success giving it at mealtime and our dr said not to worry too much since it is still working. (mainly because her pm nap takes her right to dinner time and she doesnt like to wait to eat!) we split a capsule and give on whatever she is eating - dr. did not tell us to avoid anything. i dont know that i would put it in a bottle - the little beads might stick to the sides and not get eaten.

Bryson (3/06), former Neocate, Nexium, and Reglan baby. Diagnosed with peanut allergy and asthma. Weaned from meds in Spring 0f 08. Brother, Parker (6/04), was also on Prevacid and Pregestimil (formula) as an infant.
We were switched to Nexium when Bryson was 6 months old because he was not getting relief from Prevacid. It was a wonderful switch for him and he stayed on it for 16 months. We were told to either dispense it by the applesauce method or by putting it in a sryinge mixed with water. We found it easier to give it to him by syringe because our son always wanted more than just one bite of applesauce. We waited 30-60 minutes after giving him the meds. before feeding him. It worked out because I would give him the med in the morning and then we drove to work and he was ready to eat as soon as he got to school. I was blessed that my school had a daycare for faculty so he was close by. Now I am changing districts so he will be going to a daycare facility. Anyway, we poured the beads into the top of the syringe and mixed it with water (3/4 tsp) and gave it to him. Tasted terrible but he never complained. That worked best for us! The applesauce would probably be easier as with the syringe you have to keep your finger over the bottom of it while you fill it with water or the beads will pour out. Takes a little getting used to. My husband had a hard time with it so I did it. good luck and I hope they can fine relief for your son. amanda

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
We did Nexium as I posted before when the Prevacid didn't cut it anymore. We used 40mg a day. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I honestly just opened the capsule and poured it on his tongue. He really didn't seem to mind. The capsules are kind of messy but you are probably used to that since you use the Prevacid ones. It is like Prevacid in that you aren't supposed to give it with food but we often did and it didn't seem to make a huge difference. Nexium is a level 2 PPI where Prevacid is a level 1 PPI so most drs won't prescribe it to a young child. So hopefully the GI will be able to help tomorrow. Good Luck!
