Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
Upper GI and eating after midnight?
Hello. Our LO was diagnosed with GERD at 3 weeks and I just got her a referral to a gastro. dr. and she wants to do an upper GI. My question is what did you do about feeding after midnight? Since she eats so little during the day she takes a bottle twice after midnight and won't sleep if hungry. Did water help with easing hunger? Any advice is appreciated!

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Hi! So she's 7 or 8mos...I don't know your dd, but when my dd had her upper GI, she did fine not eating after midnight. She was only 7wks. I think your dd will do ok. It was worse on me than on Mags :)

Good luck to you!

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
She is almost 9 months (hit the 11 instead of 10 keys for her birthdate). The dr took her off all solid food except for banana, pears, apples and oatmeal. We meet with the allergist on Tuesday since she was exclusively breastfed the first four months of her life and was throwing breastmilk up. DH had to hold her while they drew blood yesterday since she would look at me and howl harder because I wasn't holding her. She was on Zantac but at the highest dose for her size and it started giving her migraines so we have switched to Prevacid. It seems to help giving her somewhat of her appetite back but she still will only take very small portions. I see babies younger than her drinking 8-10 ounces in a bottle and it is only then do I realize how little she drinks with 4 ounces being a full meal for her at bedtime!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
She sounds just like Sebastian! He had tests done this past week and he, too, couldn't eat after midnight. He eats once at night and once first thing in the a.m. What I did was wake him up at 11:45 for a bottle. He wouldn't drink the whole thing, but half was better than nothing. He actually had his worst night in months that night (not because of the eating...he has ear issues), but he still did OK. In the morning, I gave him a Pedialyte bottle (Hopkins told us we can do that up to 2 hours before a patient's scheduled arrival time). He didn't get to eat again until 5:30 PM, and he was Ok.

As for the small meals, Sebastian is 24 pounds and 31 inches, and the most he drinks at a time is 6 oz. 8-10 oz at a time is insane! We used ot have to do 3 or 4 oz at a time with him, but then one day, we jsut waited an extra long time between feedings (like twice as long) and bam! He took five oz...and later, six. I did NOT see that coming, but it was great!

Good luck with the tests!!!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
Jedd has his feeding tube so when ever he needed tio stop his pump at midnight I would just give him a "bolus" into the tube to give him some extra. I never ran clears like they told me we could do. for us we were told a time to cut off clear liquds as well. It was always about 6 hours before any testing. I woudl call the GI and see what they want you to do.

We always got a letter in the mail telling us all the "rules" we needed to follow. Each hospital is different so you need to find out the pritocol for YOUR hospital...SORRY

be careful with water or pedilyte with refluxers, my dd was denied a endoscopy(edg)-by the anesthesiologist- b/c we gave her water 4 hours before and she was still refluxing it up. a week later we got another appt. she was 10 months when she had her EDG

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
I can't add much to the upper GI advice other that what the pps have said. I agree that giving a bottle right before the "deadline" is a good idea. As far as the bottles go, my dd is 15 months and only takes 8 oz occasionally. At your dd's age, Halley was only taking around 5-6 oz, so 4 oz doesn't sound all that unreasonable to me (on the low side, yes, but it kinda depends on the frequency of the bottles). Good luck with the UGI - it will likely be more stressful for you than it is for her. Be prepared for some NASTY white diapers the next few days after the exam.

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
My son had a scope at that age where he couldn't eat after midnight and I thought it would be horrible but he surprised me and really did well. The hardest part was after we got there and had to wait and he was really hungry. I swear everyone at the hospital knew my kid was hungry. For his upper GI we could have water after midnight. It really is such a fast procedure if you can survive the no eating period. Bring your own bottles for the procedure.
