Jeremiah update
Sorry guys I dont mean to be a post hog. I just wanted to update on his aversion. He is reacting well to the exercises that we have to do. He is tolerating some foods with out gagging also. He will come over to our side to play with the babies and I will do the exercises with the 3 babies since the twins are starting to eat. He is also now picking up finger foods and trying to put them in his mouth.

Melissa I wanted to explain what was going on since I didn't get a chance to the other day. The aversion and soft spot issue is not related at all. It is just so unfortunate the baby has both. The aversion is caused from his severe gag reflex and his mother always using a bottle instead of other things in his mouth. He got the gag reflex honest. I have it so bad that I can't brush my teeth without gagging bad. All of my children have a mild case of it. We are working on that also with the exercises. The OT therapist said by 12 mths both of these should be resolved.

He is going to be going to OT once weekly for his aversion, gag reflex, and motor skills that he is behind in. He has a PT eval soon also. I dont think he is behind in this area though b/c he is already crawling.

The soft spot problem occured when his soft spot on the top and back of his head completely closed. It shouldn't close completely until they are 18-24 mths. Since it has closed his brain and skull can no longer expand due to the bones being firmly in place. They are no longer pliable. His forehead has started to cone out since that is the only way it can go. The neuro drs has to go in there and break his skull, split it, and put a wire plate in there to keep it open until the age it should close. He will be in a helmet for about 10 wks. He has to sleep upright completely for 4 wks. It is a long hard recovery process especially for someone like a baby.

The surgery itself will set him back to about a 4 mth old. He will have to learn everything over again. Right now he is a bright little boy even with no guidance until we got him a mth ago. I just pray that he is as pain free as he can be. I will let you know when everything is.

Also he is the little monkey who is bringing all of this sickness in. I stay sheltered at home all the time to keep them well. Needless to say fat baby is bringing all these germs home from day care to the babies and Braddy. Hopefully their immune system will toughen up after time. I sure hope so.

I am so sorry! Poor Jeremiah certainly has had the run of issues :-(

Mila's soft spot closed at 9 months completely - she had no issues from it? Robby's closed very early as well.

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Poor little guy! I think the soft spot on the back of the head closes pretty early on, but the front one usually doesn't go away until 12-24 months. I hope that his surgery goes well. Babies are so incredibly resilient though - I guess it's better that it's being taken care of now when he can relearn so quickly. Keep us posted.
