bottle weaning...UGGG
Lauren will be 13 months old tomorrow, so I know I *should* have done this already...We are currently down to just 2 bottles a day, one before naptime and one at bedtime. Today I gave her a sippy cup at naptime instead of the bottle. She was NOT HAPPY about it to say the least. She took about 2 oz then began playing with the cup. I took it away, rocked her for a few minutes and then put her in her crib wide awake. She's been playing up there now for 30 minutes. I am DREADING taking away the night time bottle too! I know I have to do it this month because dh goes back to work in August and I want him to be here to help me...

Any suggestions to ease this transition? Should I just do away with both bottles at once and suffer for a few days? How have others done this?

Chris: Mom to Rayna Marie our little miracle born June 13, 2007. 7lbs 12oz. Diagnosed with GERD after ph probe at 5 weeks. Current weight 21lbs 8 oz. Prevacid 8ml in a.m. 2% milk
The week before Rayna's 1st Birthday we cut down to just the bottle at bedtime, then a week later we took away her bedtime bottle. We do a "snack" and sippy right before bed then she goes to bed awake, usually plays with her doggie until she falls asleep. I really didn't want to stop the bedtime bottle right away because without a bottle, she doesn't seem like my "baby" anymore, It's like she growing up too fast! Good Luck with whatever you decide!!

With my girls I have never found an easy way to do this, LOL! We always went cold turkey after they were down to 2 bottles. Just a week or so ago we got rid of Abby's last two bottles. She went on a milk strick b/c she refuses to drink it out of a sippy. I am sure that this will last a few weeks but they always give in. :0) So I guess am not a lot of help, LOL.

daniejo
Mom (Danie) to Adam (9-4-03) & Nate (3-7-07) Nate was diagnosed with silent AR at 2 months old. He was on neocate, prevacid 30mg per day and couldn't start solids till he was almost 8 months old. He started cow's milk at 14 months and is currently off all meds!! So far so good :) PIC: Disney trip 2008. Nate didn't know Piglet was there, he didn't like the characters too much.
OK...I know you are in a sticky situation...Nate was drink sooo much milk and he was soooo dependant on his bottle, lol. I couldn't even get him down to just a few bottles a day...he wanted lik 8, LOL!! I had to go cold turkey at 13 months. I also know you need Lauren to still get as many calories from milk as possible so this is a tuff one. Jennifer, do what is BEST for you right now...please don't feel pressured from what the "books" say. That is my 2 cents :)

I did what I thought was the "right" thing to do with Adam...I took his away BEFORE he was a year b/c my friend told me it would be "too late" after that. Looking back, Adam was NOT ready to give it up (neither was I) I STILL hold Nate in my arms and rock him while he drinks his milk from his sippy before bed...I'll do it till he's 10 if he let's me ;) Best of luck girl...it's harder on us then it is them :(

I agree with Danie there is no law that says you have to have your baby off the bottle at 12 months. So so it what is best for you and Lauren. From what I have read and seen is that most kids wean themselves when they are ready. This is just my opinion but I would just give her the sippy through out the day and still do the night time bottle and when she is used to the sippy switch it for the bottle at night. I always feel like once they are off the bottle all the babyness is gone. I was never in a hurry. JMHO!

Thanks ladies! I am not in a hurry to get rid of the night time bottle either, I think of about 10 reasons a day why I shouldn't. But your right, most of them have to do with me not wanting to lose my baby more than they have to do with her! The calorie issue hangs over my head too, like Danie mentioned. I really don't want to send her to bed without the 8 oz in her belly she's used to! Maybe we will hold on to that night time bottle a little longer...

She did go to sleep today after about 35 minutes and slept for an hour and a half. She's given up her morning nap, but her afternoon naps haven't lengthened out like I was hoping...We just do a really early bedtime!
