Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
PCOS/Metformin during Pregnancy=Reflux?
To the ladies w/ PCOS that took Met during their pregnancy (I did as directed by my ob) I heard there may be a correlation between the medication and it causing reflux in babies? Have any of you heard of this?

Josh 12 yrs colic as a baby
Jenna 6 yrs dream baby
Jessica (6/11/07) Silent reflux dx at 3 weeks
Went off meds successfully at 3 mos
Went back on Prevacid 8 mg TID 1/3/08
I have PCOS but never took Met. Sorry I don't know. It's interesting. No matter what I wouldn't feel guilty. I'm sure you needed the Met and lots of kids whose moms didn't take met have reflux! Cristy

She's doing great so far! (yogurt) I'm thrilled. Other friends look at me like I'm nuts for being so happy about it but they haven't gone through the reflux route before so they wouldn't understand how much of a relief it is that she can handle this stuff. ;) Thanks for asking. :)

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
I took Metformin in both my pregnancies and I have one refluxer and one without. So who knows? It does cross through the blood so I suppose it is possible but so are a lot of other things so I try not to put to much stake in correlations.

pH of mama causing reflux?
I had bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections like mad during pregnancy. I wonder if there is any correlation between pH of the mama, then acid reflux in the baby?

8 Month old Esme...Reflux since birth. Doing well on Solids. Zantac (1ml 2x a day)
I have PCOS and I did take metformin. I didn't take it during my pregnancy because I took it before to ovulate. I did read an article about the correlation between having PCOS and having babies with reflux. The metformin had nothing to do with it since it is a Diabetic drug. I don't know where I found the article but it was on line. It was very interesting. There was a relationship with hormonal inbalance and the higher risk of having a baby with reflux issues.

Ok yeah that makes more sense-I was wrong about the Met then. Ok so it was the PCOS/hormone imbalance itself that was could be a factor in babies w/ reflux or some babies with reflux. I know it can't be the only factor I just thought it was interesting, ya know? ;)

PCOS is polycystic ovarian syndrome. It's an endocrine(hormone) thing that makes it hard to get pg, can make it hard to be a normal weight, can increase you risk of diabetes and can cause acne and excess hair growth(yuck those last 2 are me). I had 2 kids without reflux and one with. Cristy

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I didn't take either of those during pregnancy, and I have a reflux baby. My sister didn't take either one either time she was pregnant, and she has one reflux baby and one non-reflux child...

Wait a minute - I am a moron. I thought PCOS was a medication. So my posts about myself and my sister are irrelevant. Sorry!!!!

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
i didn't take anything while preggers except tylenol and tums. i quit smoking, never drank, ate right, only gained 25 pounds, exercised, etc. and my child still refluxes @ 9 mo and can't eat solids.

I hope you are'n't thinking that maybe you caused her reflux. i'm just glad they have something available for you do take to control your condition and help you have that beautiful girl. i've heard of PCOS. how do you get diagnosed?

Yeah I had a nurse tell me once "oh you took Met while pregnant? Well no wonder she had reflux!" Thaaaaaaaaaanks. I was just curious if anyone had heard of a correlation.

You did NOT cause her reflux! Like Coy's mom, I did everything "right" during pregnancy. I walked EVERY day (I walked over two miles the day I had my son), avoided all nuts, didn't take any meds (except for when I had BV), ate no junk food, etc, etc...and my son is allergic to everything on the planet (including nuts) AND has reflux.
