Swallowing Problems During Cold & Teething
Hi everyone. Have any of your Los experienced trouble swallowing during a cold (coupled with cutting 2 more teeth on top of 5!!). coyle was barely drinking his bottles during the 1st part of the cold. 5 hours took 2 hours. he would sip, then stop, cough, sip again. He didn't eat any solids for 5 days. So, now the cold is almost gone but we're left with still a runny nose and the extra saliva from his teething. Last night he gagged on his formula so badly that he puked about 2 ounces up after turning violently red. This afternoon the same thing happened with a Gerber Puff. (BTW, I'm super duper excited that he can somewhat tolerate soy lecithin. i borrowed some from the neighbor and he did fine but i went back and bought the soy free ones anyway since his reflux did flare up slightly.. just no ghastly vomit!).

the pedi said that if it continues when the cold is completely gone then we might have to do a swallow study. but, he's always kinda had trouble with thin liquids (water, juice) and sometimes with this formula.... could the cold/teething make this worse? thanks!

Mathias Johann - 12/14/05 - GERD, Hypotonia, Sensory Processing Disorder, Dyspraxia; Stopped silently aspirating at 20 months :)
First partial seizure on 7/2; First Endoscopy on 7/16; results: bile reflux gastritis.
New Meds: Zegerid & Carafate
Allergic to dairy
M silently aspirated from birth until 20 months b/c of dysphagia. I don't really remember him having extra problems while he was teething. I know a swallow study sounds a bit on the scary side, it is actually pretty quick and simple. M had 3 of them before he was 20 months. He was awake the whole time and I was able to be with him and do the feeding part. The answers it can give are really helpful. If Coyle is having swallowing troubles getting him help earlier is so much better. Waiting too long can cause other feeding issues when he is ready to move to solids. Horay on the Puffs!

Dd (7) w/ SPD (sensory processing disorder), hypotonia, GERD, since birth. Previous PT, OT, Early Intervention, special ed, feeding clinic, feeding therapy from 2-3. Reflux meds since 2. Overcame severe feeding challenges, dysphagia, oral aversions, anxiety disorder. Weaned from reflux meds @ 6 1/2 yrs. A true miracle!! Ds (4) Prevacid 30mg, split am/pm; upcoming endoscopy. Ds (9 mos.), nursing, pureed foods, Zantac 1.2 mL 2x/day.
Our kids usually experience increased reflux flare-ups when they have a cold or virus. Sometimes even 2 or 3 days after the illness is gone the reflux is still flaring because it got their system so out of whack. Teething can make it worse too. I agree that checking in with your Dr. if it goes on too long, though, is a good idea. Sorry your LO is having so much trouble right now. Hope he is feeling better soon.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
If there nose is stuffy I imagine that can make it hard to coordiante that swallow tlet alone that the nasl drip does to the throat.

Yep Jedd always did worse when teething or when he had a cold. Cold;s REALLY slowed his gut donw to a crawl.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Sebastian and Coy are brothers from different mothers. Bassy gets the same way with food when he is recovering from or dealing with a cold. I can barely get him to drink his Neocate, and solids are an absolute joke. One of the moms on here suggested I put Orajel on his gums before his bottle, and I was hesitant because every time we use it, he puts his hands in his mouth, rubs his eyes, and gives himself an infection. But I find that putting it on at this time WORKS.

Sebastian also has trouble with thin liquids. He likes water - won't touch juice anymore - but he chokes on it every time. But he doesn't on Pedialyyte...but he does on every single bedtime bottle. Arggghhh. We are going to have a swallowing study, too. We both can just add that knew specialist to the list.

Mine choked, gagged etc when they had a cold or teething. I don't know if it was reflux flares causing it or sinus drainage. I hope that it resolves itself when he is feeling better. ((HUGS))
