Maddi (05/08/08) just started Zantac .6ml twice a day.
Are these signs of acid reflux
Maddi was born 05/08/08. Around 6 weeks she stopped eating well. She would eat for a few minutes and then start to make choking noises. I would sit her up and most of the time she would spit up. Her spit up was mucusy and still milky (no curds). Her stomach always makes noises and she has a lot of gas and violent poop (which don’t seem to hurt her, she doesn't cry, but she does not enjoy them) Pediatrician diagnosed here with acid reflux and prescribed Zantac. I have been giving her the Zantac for 3 days now. The first two days ate like a champ. She did spit up a little but she did not make nearly as many choking noises. Today she does not want to eat at all. When she does eat she spits it back up or chokes on it. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen similar symptoms.

when you say "violent poop" You are referring to diarrhea? If so, it could be that she is still experiencing symptoms because of a milk or soy intolerance or both. I would see about trying a hypoallergenic formula such as nutramigen. Choking on it is really scary, we had a ton of issues with quinn. it puts them at a bit of a risk for pneumonia. You might try adding rice cereal to the bottles. It does sound an aweful lot like reflux and stuff that most of us moms on here have dealt with. I'm sort of out the door. sorry this is short. I know other moms will be on here to give you some advise as well. Welcome to the forums!!!! -Sarah

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Yeha, sounds like a milk intolerance to me as well. Even though it may not look like it there can be blood in stools (in really BAD cases of it) You would mknow by now if that was the case. You could always swithc to soy and she how that goes, ask the ped. for a recommendation on a formula.

Zantac is real weight sensitive as well. dont' think that's the issue either unless you have seen TONS of weight gain in 3 days...LOL

Soem kids just needs something stronger than Zantac. Jedd needed prilosec a PPI tends to do the trick better.

But to answer your ??? Yes, it does sound like reflux.

I wouldelevate the bed at night to hlep as well. And, I would keep her upright after feeds. You can also ask the ped. about thickening the formual as well. All of those are the first line of defense against reflux.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
is she BF or formula fed currently? the noises happened to coyle before i put him on alimentum. those noises were an indication that he was about to "blow" and then he would puke everywhere-out the nose-etc. etc... he still spits up and has issues with reflux but not of the volume that it was BF, milk, or soy fed... HTH

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Hi! Oh the noises...I remember those. Maggie was diagnosed at 7wks after lots of ped visits. She also had a mild milk intolerance. I was bfeeding and had to limit dairy. If you're bfeeding, I'd do an elimination diet (cut out dairy and soy for 2wks) and if she's drinking formula, I'd try alimentum or nutramigen. See how that goes and if it doesn't help after a couple weeks, I'd consider a different med or go up on the dose. Hugs!

My son had projectile poop and projectile vomiting (before they gave him unnecessary surgery for the vomiting - called it pyloric stenosis). Then they switched us to Nutramigen, which helped some, but not enough (still milk based). Then they put us on soy, which caused a terrible rash. Finally, after seeing an allergist, on our own, we discovered he was allergic to milk, soy, eggs, nuts. Just a thought. Ellen

Opps, forgot to say, they only thing that worked in our case was Neocate. If only the GI Dr. or the hospital put him on this right from the start..............

Dd (7) w/ SPD (sensory processing disorder), hypotonia, GERD, since birth. Previous PT, OT, Early Intervention, special ed, feeding clinic, feeding therapy from 2-3. Reflux meds since 2. Overcame severe feeding challenges, dysphagia, oral aversions, anxiety disorder. Weaned from reflux meds @ 6 1/2 yrs. A true miracle!! Ds (4) Prevacid 30mg, split am/pm; upcoming endoscopy. Ds (9 mos.), nursing, pureed foods, Zantac 1.2 mL 2x/day.
Choking and spitting up can definitely be signs of reflux. But the gas, violent poop, and mucous in the spitup seem like it might be something else too.

Maddi (05/08/08) just started Zantac .6ml twice a day.
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. To give you some more information I am currently BF. When Maddi poops it always sounds violent. Sometimes there is mucus in it and sometimes it is seedy. It is always mustard yellow. I took her to the pediatrician on Friday. She changed her from Zantac to Prevacid. I am having a hard time getting her to take the Prevacid. She likes to spit things out of her mouth even when you get it in the side of her mouth. The pediatrician also wants to do an Upper GI. If anyone has experience with their infant having an upper GI I would like to hear about it. I am scared it is going to hurt her. Honestly I am scared to death. The other problem I seem to be having is she is feasting and feminine herself. She doesn't want to eat all day but wants to eat none stop all night. I am worried she is become dehydrated because she doesn't seem to be peeing as much but the pediatrician seemed to think she was fine.
Check with your
doctor first!
