mucus and nasal congestion
Hi, my son was dx with GERD 3 weeks ago. When he was 2 weeks old I new something was not right (he is now 2 1/2 months), he was very congested and had a lot of sticky mucus in the milk he was regurgitating/vomiting. The 3 Mds I consulted though that he had a virus. He was gagging, grunting, coughing and choking so much, needless to say I was always awake. I finally had enough one afternoon and decided that I was going back to the hospital and not leaving until something was done. He was prescribed Zantac and we are now at the maximum dose, if he is not better by Sunday we will start prevacid. He still has so much mucus, has wheezing and difficulty breathing because of his nasal congestion. I use Hydrasense/salinex before every feeding but it does not seem to help much. I am wondering if any of you experienced so much sticky mucus in the regurgitation and vomit? When I read many of the posted messages 2 nights ago I was sad to see the pain that our children have to endure every day and did not sleep much that night. Today was a very bad day. Mikael did not sleep much (about 3 times 15 minutes between 9h00am and 8h00pm), turned blue when he choked this morning and cried on and off all day. I am also wondering if any of you tried the tucker sling and if yes, if you were satisfied? PS: sorry for any mistakes, my first language is French Tx Brigit

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Welcome! I'm so sorry you're going through this with your little one. My son has always had a lot of congestion related to reflux, as there is almost always fluid in his throat and sinuses, although never as severe as it sounds like your little one is experiencing. You will get lots of support and good advice here -- but I would like to suggest that you re-post this in the Infant forum, as people check that one, and respond, much more frequently than this one. Best wishes (and your English is impeccable!) Cristina

Hey, mine also had that problem. We ended up using allergy meds to help dry up the congestion and the saline to rinse out their sinuses.

You may want to post this question to the "General Beginner and Infant forum" too since it gets much more traffic.

I hope your little one is better today!!

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I don't think you made any mistakes and I'm known as the mistake catcher at the beginner-infant forum. I just wanted to also suggest that you come to that forum. You can copy/paste your post over there. There is a lot more mommy traffic on that forum.

Hi! I am reading this and I am concerned that your little one may have reflux and something else. Can you consult with a pediatric gastroenterologist to get the best care for the reflux and to see if there is anything else? Maybe you already have. I am sure the doctor will want to know about the blue episode, although reflux can definately cause that. I kow how hard it is to see your loved one in pain and to not get enough sleep yourself night after night. One thing we noticed, and many othere here too, is that it can take a good month on prevacid before it reaches it's full helpfulness. I'm not sure how long you tried it, but it may get better with time and with the reglan. Just so you know if your little one doesn't tolerate reglan sometimes they use the antibiotic erythomycin for gastric emptying too. I haven't tried the sling. We just elevate the bed like you do. We did Tylenol a lot before the Prevacid kicked in to just try to take the edge off the pain. I'm not sure if it helped but we felt like we were doing something. We also did Ibuprofen for pain. Though technically you are not supposed to give Ibuprofen for babies under 6 mos without a prescription(it's because the doctors want to investigate any fever in a child that young, not because Ibuprofen is dangerous to babies). I agree come over the the infant forum.

welcome and hugs Cristy

Sorry you're having these problems with your baby. Our daughter was diagnosed with silent reflux and MSPI shortly after birth (she's now almost 5 years old). She had chronic congestion, cough, wheezing, AND ear infections - all more or less associated with her reflux issues. We had to start a regimen of nebulizer treatments for almost two years. We did maintenance pulmicort treatments and added xoponex when her congestion was really bad. Finding the right medication is also key to getting the reflux and congestion under control. I really think you will find more success with a PPI medication - either Prevacid or even Nexium. I would also suggest the Baby Bjorn carrier for daytime naps. Annie was a horrible sleeper, and at least she could sleep in the carrier alot more confortably since she was completely upright in the Baby Bjorn. It would also give me freedom to do things while she was sleeping. Cleaning, walking, shopping. During her fussiest times at night I would put her in a sling to get through the worst bewitching hours. Good luck, and make sure you see a specialist ASAP if you already haven't. We had several specialist treating Annie before her 3rd month - her regular pediatrician, pediatric GI specialist, allergy and asthma specialist, and ENT specialist.

Thank you all so much for your responses and support. I will definitely post this in the infant forum, oups... I am so happy that I found this site, it is comforting and helpful to read your messages. I have an appointment with Mikael's pediatrician on March 19 but considering the responses I will try to see the MD sooner and get references to see other specialists. I will also get info re reglan nad nexium as I am not familiar with these meds. I also though about giving him tylenol for the pain. Today is a good day and my husband is home to help so it is good. I use the snuggly during the day when he is fussy and it seems to help but it is not to comfortable for me. Baby bjorn looks more comfortable, I will look into it. Tx again to all for sharing your experiences and your advice. I will put a picture of Mik as soon as I figure how to do it... Brigit

Macy, mama to Alexia, 2nd child with reflux. Born 4.5 weeks early on Oct. 20th. Showing signs of reflux very first week. Exclusively breastfed, starting elimination diet 11/1.
Hi Brigit, I just wanted to add that my daughter also suffers from horrible congestion associated with reflux. Last week, I forgot to give her a single dose of Erythromycin and she could not breath and was gagging and choking. Even when I lifted her completely upright it did not help. She has DGE delayed gastric emptying, which explains why she can throw up and be congested hours after a meal. Please do try to get in to see a specialist asap. It took us over 3 months and 5 different medications to figure things out. Keep us updated and I agree that your English is great! Macy

Bonjour, I tried to see my pediatrician before March 19 but he is not available so I took an app. with our family doctor and will ask for references and possibly meds prescription for his congestion. We are starting prevacid tomorrow, hopefully, this will help improve his condition. I have ordered the tuckersling. Thanks for your nice comments re my english, I learned english when I was 15. We moved to Wash DC for 3 years and then came back to Quebec. I worked on and off in english and now I work 80% of the time in english but I have been off work since last June. My prononciation is probably suffering more now then my grammar. I will keep you posted, Brigit

Help
