This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Reglan issues
I'm wondering if anyone's baby seemed to get worse on Reglan. My little girl is on 5 meds (prevacid, reglan, lactulose, axid, and mylanta) with several changes previous (tried prilosec and ranitadine) and is on her 6th formula (before she was 3 months old!) She's nearing 4 months now, and seems to be acting somewhat peculiar. Instead of shrieking for hours at a time, she's now strangely whining constantly with intermittent screams, fighting sleep like a banshee, and the regurgitation seems to be worse. We've only been on the reglan for a week and a half with increasing the dose from twice to three times daily 5 days ago, and her GE says try to stick it out another few days to see if the irritability goes away. I'm just curious to know if it actually does get better, or if I need to call her GE again.

We had to DX the reglan for our son. He was WAY maxed out, he took 5 doses at day at 1.5ml each dose...that's alot, he weighed around 17 lbs at the time. He would SCREAM for HOURS on end ALL the time. The only time he stopped was if he was held and it was not a spoiled t hing going on.....about 2 weeks after stopping the reglan all the side affects were gone. We switched to erythromycin and have seen it work just as well.

Macy, mama to Alexia, 2nd child with reflux. Born 4.5 weeks early on Oct. 20th. Showing signs of reflux very first week. Exclusively breastfed, starting elimination diet 11/1.
Tia too had a horrendous time on Reglan. We took her off it after 2 weeks. She would not stop crying hysterically at all times. It completely changed her personality and she had all these jerky movements. We were already on EES so we moved onto Prevacid and now back to Zantac.
Doctors have good intentions but they aren't living it 24 hours a day like we are. I always dictate what I feel best and it's turned Tia into a much happier baby. I personally think 2 weeks is long enough.. I knew I couldn't take much more. As it was it took 4-5 days to get it out of her system.

She was taken off the reglan, but we also found out the next day that she had a nasty ear infection as well. However, she's doing much better off of it - strangely reduced amounts of vomit and much happier and calmer...

Currently drinking Elecare vanilla 30cal/oz and breastmilk.
Meds: Nexium 10mg 2x daily. Carafate as needed, miralaxx as needed, probiotics daily
I wonder about reglan sometimes. My ds has been on it since he was 5 days old. I don't know what he would be like w/o the meds. He does need to be held the majority of the time, and he is only 6w, so it is not a spoiled thing either. I really wish I knew. The one time he was w/o his meds, he was miserable. He also has bad apnea and turns blue w/o it. He is a silent reluxer, so it is so hard to judge his symptoms. The only thing he does is this deep swallow, like he is trying to keep something down. This whole ordeal can be so frustrating.

Message to Molly Beth
Dear Molly Beth, When your baby is on several medications and treatments, it can be very confusing to know what is really helping and if all of the medications are needed. I hope you will talk to the doctor about your concerns and evaluate all of the treatments at each doctors appointment. If a missed dose leads to a return of symptoms, it is likely the medication is still needed at this point. Reglan happens to be a medication that is best weaned (slowly decreased) rather than stopped all at once. Again, you will want to work with the doctor about this. A baby with breathing issues and reflux may need a lot more treatment at first. As things calm down, perhaps the treatment won't be as intense. Hang in there! Five month old w/ GERD. Recently had nonresponsive/stopped breathing episode due to possible aspiration.

My son is on reglan and i worry about the side effects of it. He takes 0.8ml up to four times a day. He has not been sleeping well and is so cranky. The reglan doesn't seem to be completely taking care of his reflux symptoms either. I am scared to take him off of it though because he had a nonresponsive episode due to reflux/aspiration episode and i don't want that to happen again.

joslyn was on reglan for about 2 weeks. (half the dose the doc said to give) we took her off of it when we noticed her behavior change. She was less than 2 months old and she was a completely different baby! She would scream all day while on reglan and we saw no change in her. We took her off and within a week she was back to normal (behavior wise). We did research on it and in some adults it causes suicidal tendencies and depression. We were afraid she was feeling those. reglan can work for some kids/babies but not for our miracle.

Riley at 2.5 months old....Diagnosed with GERD at 2 months, prevacid desovable tabs twice a day, regaln and zantac did not work for us.Switched to Nutramigen formula (with extra scoops for calories) upper GI done, negative for pyloric stenosis,or any milk allergies...possible PH probe test soon to come....still waiting on DGE diagnosis......Shes our lil cutie =)
Riley was on Regaln for about two and a half weeks the GI took her off of it b/c I noticed that she would sleep... ALL THE TIME... Like thorugh the night and take two0 three really long naps during the day it was scary b/c she would be like out of it and in a deep deep sleep.... regaln I think is great but it really only works with some kids.
Check with your
doctor first!
