How to boost his appetite ?
Hello, I'm new here with a GERD boy, he is 28 mo. old and has reflux since 2 mo. Since there we have ups and downs, mostly downs :(( He is vomiting everyday, even from the water. On top of that he lost his appetite now. He is on Periactin 2 times a day. But not helping him. We did all test and they all came back normal, really crazy, he has to have something wrong with him. He lost his 4 up front teeth :((( because of his vomiting and medicines. He has lack of sleep. Lack of appetite. Food aversions and now bottle aversion. He complitly stop drinking any milk, he hates his bottle, he is not eating any solids, because he can't chew. He can make 2 or 3 bites of food at a time and that is all his meal. It is not enogh for growing boy. We saw dietition who said that he must!!! consume 1300-1500 cal dayli :((( but how on earth am I going to put all these calories in him :(( I lost my sleep and I'm really depressed now. I fell like I can't do anything for my child to hlep him go through these :( I'm all alone, myexhusband actualy left us, funny thing, when my son starts to vomit, he just said that he cant' tolerate it , it makes him sick, he can't take it, that his bed and his furniture covered in pukes, so he left me with 2 mo. old child :(( helpless and without job. I will apriciate if you moms could suggest us anything to boost his appetite. Also I'm looking for low volume high calorie supplements to help him gain weigh. Because he can consume very little at a time, like 1-2 oz. Thank you all. And sory for long story.

Nika 4 years - healthy and happy. Skyler 3 years - food allergies and intolerances, GER at 2 weeks, GERD at 1 year. Currently on 45mg Prevacid split dose, Reglan, Maalox X strength, and multiple respiratory meds for GERD related RAD (reactive airway disease).
Hi ana, Welcome to PAGER. We've all had GERDlings that wont eat. Is he on a formula? They do have high calorie formulas. I wish I could help you with some food suggestions, but my Skyler who is almost 3, is allergic to most foods and he eats very poorly himself. His diet is something that I've really been struggling with finding a supportive GI doctor and nutritionist. When Skyler was on formula and had periods where he stopped taking in any food at all I ordered flavoring from Nestle - which also changed the smell and color of the formula making it more appealing for them. What meds is he taking, I would guess he has pain related to food/reflux and thats why he has decided not to eat ~ thats what Skyler does. Maalox helps temorarily (you should check with his doctor first) - Skyler uses a Tablespoon immediately before all meals to help ease the discomfort. I hope he is able to eat soon, and that you are both able to sleep! Me and Skyler are going through a very rough time with his reflux right now as well. Things will get better, just a day at a time.

Also, I wanted to add that my husband left me just before Skyler was born, with a 2 year old and also no job. It is a seemingly impossible place to start from, but there is a lot of help available. you should start with your local social services department. Things were really hard for a long time for me, but now (almost 3 years later) I feel that me and the kids are in a much better place and aside from Sky's medical concerns we are all doing good. Things will be better!

Hi ''adonael'' and thank you so much for understanding. I feel much better. It is great to know that you are not alone when you're going through this phase. My son is on Periactin, Axid, Reglan 3 times a day. So seems like he is getting all help. But still he is suffering. I just can't belive that all these meds isn't working for him. It's just can't be true. :((( I just spoke with our GI, and she is thinking of NGtube or fundo :((( if he will not feel better. Just last Friday we came from the hospital because of his dihydration. He was doing ok that day and night. But the next day its all came back. Also he is not on any formulas', because he just won't drink it, he hates his bottle, and any milk or formula. I tried to put milk in cups but he was puking from the smell of it :(( So now he lives only on food from our table. Sometimes I have to chew for him and feed him like a bird. It' s funny :)) but we have to live somehow. So I find that if I chew for him and feed him atleast he will get something in his stomach. Also we are struggling with the meds :((( he will gag on them and vomit, over and over again. So today he didn't get any med, because he vomited everything. i tried to give him one more time, but it was the same. I told it to our GI and she is just keep telling me that if it is going to be the same the only solution she can find is NGtube :(( Why should our poor children suffer so much :(( why not me, he is just starting to live and alreade gone through all these stuff. I live in NY and had a social service for 1st year, now they want me to work, because my child is over 2 yo and he has to be in daycare. So thay just telling me to get a job.

Im sorry things are so tough. Have you checked into daycare? Is there a center that is able to care for him and give him his meds? If they want you to work then they need to help you find a safe place that can care for your child while you work and if there isnt a place then you are still eligible for aid. I wish things were easier for us all. I had to have that exact fight regarding skyler. Skyler is not on formula now but I am going to see about starting again as a supplement. So he eats table foods? Does he keep them down? Has he had allergy testing or have you noticed that some foods really upset his symptoms and maybe others dont? It took forever to find foods gentle enough for Skyler.

feeding help
Hello! Your story is amazing. Your son has lost 4 teeth from reflux? wow... I wonder if your doctor would refer your son to a feeding therapist or feeding clinic. Maybe he has feeding problems from the reflux or a problem with chewing and swallowing. A feeding therapist can really make a big difference. Also, a feeding therapist can tell the parents and the doctors if the pain from reflux is controlled by the medication. This is very important. If feeding therapy and medication do not help, then surgery may be needed. Until you have tried every possible treatment, you will not be satified that he really needs surgery. I also encourage you to find out about day care available to you. Sometimes it is possible to get day care while you are looking for a job or getting training for a job. this can be such hard work for everyone. In the long run, this will help your entire family. jan

Hi, we have been through a lot too. I don't think that eating should be so difficult to get him to do! Have your doctors recommended tube feeding him? I mean that I don't want to just mention that, but it appears that you have done a lot to get him to drink and stuff. He is 28mo. That's a lot of time and effort into getting him to drink and it sounds like you have been working your butt off in trying to get him to eat. Let me know what your doc suggests because then I might be able to help you out more. PS> I'm a single mom too of my little GERDling. We have been through a lot together! YOU CAN MAKE IT!!! I am currently taking care of my special needs daughter all by myself. I live alone with her and I go to school. I have to say, though, I wouldn't be able to do all of it without the help from my family. I wish you luck with everything! -Sarah
