Trying to make a decision...
Hi, I have been on and off this site for quite some time and even spoke with Jan a while back. I am just not figuring out how to post... My son is 3 1/2 and has suffered from GERD his entire life. We have had chronic sinus/upper resp. infections, some days he eats, some days he does not, he sleeps horribly and is crank allot which I really think is because he is refluxing and we just can't see it. We have had every test done under the moon from upper gi, to ph probe, to scopes - everything. He has not permanant damge (probably because he has been on Prevecaid his whole life), he has mild irratation and a loose LES. His PH probe came back "normal" in terms of the amount that he refluxes, but the surgeon says "normal" is not always "normal." He also only ate 5 cheerios that whole day and still reflux 63 times in his lower esoph. and 56 in his upper and it comes all the way up... He has no "hard" symptoms to do the surgery like esophegitis etc. I just know he hurts and refluxes all night long and does not sleep. I finally taped him sleeping so the doc's could see him - it literally looks like the excersist (sp?) and the crazy thing is I never would have known because he sleeps in his bed and just does this all night long - sometimes he comes downstairs to our bed and tells us he needs Mylanta, but I guess because he has endured this chronic pain his whole life - he is almost used to it. He is on 30 mg. of Prevecaid a day and I hate to keep him on these meds his whole life. This is soooo hard and we are up and down, but I do not want my child to go through grade school etc. not sleeping and not eating and just cranky because of constant pain... This is so hard for us... I do feel like allot of reason that he does not have esoph. is because he has been on meds his whole life.. But... if you do look at his throat it is constantly red and swollen even after the tonsils being out. I feel like I am just taking a gamble with my child and it's so hard. My surgeon is Dr. Hermann in Dallas, Texas is anyone familiar with him and has anyone had this surgery done for "pain" reasons and no hard symptoms like esoph.? Do I get the button for gas? Thanks for any feedback...

Another post
As I sit here at 6 a.m. in the morning and contemplating to send my son to his first day of Mom's Day Out after he slept horribly it just kills me. He woke up around 9 p.m. last night after going to bed at 8 running down to my room with tears pooring out of his eyes telling me his throat and belly hurts again... He climbed into my bed and slept horribly all night long. Now, I am battling do I bring him to school knowing he hardly slept and that he will be cranky all day. I am so tired if my baby hurting; I just think surgery is the best for him and pray that it works out for him. He just hurts so much and has his whole life - when do you say enough is enough?

Jennifer-mom to 5. Older 3 no reflux. Evan 4yrs. silent reflux-Prilosec and Elijah(Eli) 12/06 refluxer-Nexium and Neocate Jr. Still introducing foods. Diary still a problem. Previously bf.
Your not alone
Hi Gabes mom- I have a 3.5yr old with silent reflux. He too has been dealing with this his whole life. According to his last GI's opinion he will continue to deal with his entire life. He does still have some bad sleeping nights and we just increased his Prilosec from 20mg to 40mg. I hope your little guy gets some comfort soon. Have you thought about trying a new drug? Evan doesn't do as well on Prevacid. Also maybe he just needs a dose increase. Our GI does 4mg per kg. We also struggle with eating some days. When he has bad days we give him Carnation instant breakfast in whole milk at the end of the evening. Would love to keep in touch. Unfortunately we seem to be the small percentage that gets to keep the reflux. Take care. Jennifer

Gabriel...
A quick update.. We had the nissen done yesterday and he is doing awesome... He is drinking smoothies and keeping everything down. Last night and this morning were rough and my husband came to relieve me and I came home to take care of my other 10 month old and my husband called and said he was playing in the playroom, the took out the IV, he was drinking smoothies and happy as a lark.. He said he had some little pain, but he sounded great when I talked to him. He will probably come home tomorrow which is great because I was thinking Thursday or Friday. Now.... If only my 10 month old would grow out of his - ugggg.... He too silent refluxes and has had 6 ear infections and is now on his 6th antibiotic.. It seems we are on the same path that we were with Gabriel... I am still hopeful for this guy - I just hate the pain that they go through. He is a happy little guy as Gabriel is, but I can tell when he refluxes - he hurts and when he sleeps - he hurts all night long and when he wakes - he pushes on his face and you can tell it's just burning him alive. Anyway, one at a time... I will keep posted about Gabriel...

Update
Well, Gabriel is still refluxing - I am so at a loss of what to do and just sad. He just woke from his nap screaming and as I saw him wake, he made the same face he used to make - like someone put poisen in his mouth. I just don't want to do this again (a tighter wrap). I am going to call the doctor tomorrow and see what he thinks.
Check with your
doctor first!
