Baclofen
My 13 week old has been diagnosed with reflux in the past 9 weeks he has been on everything infant gaviscon, metloclopromide, omeprozol, ranitidine and the new one is beclofen. Having read up on it it doesn't say anything about being used on babies under 1 or for reflux its mostly used on ms sufferers My baby has been suffering for 11 weeks of his 13 week life. My older son had similar problems but less severe andhe had a fundoplication at 12 weeks and he is brilliant now. I just wondered if anyone else had heard or used baclofen I'm at he end of my tether

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I'm sorry I am not familiar with baclofen. I just wanted to ask-does the doc think epilepsy may be the problem? That and ms are the only uses I found on the web. I did see a couple sites about intrauterine use, but you had to buy the articles. I'm confused about why it would be used for GERD. Did the doc give any explanation about why? If not I would definately call them and ask. Most of the babies here see a GI specialist. Have you been referred? Did the ped order any tests?

I worked with peds and baclofen was only used for muscle spasticity. What are gaviscon, metloclopromide? I think omeprozol is prevacid? Did they give prevacid at least 4 weeks to work? (Could take 4-6 weeks for full effect) Does he spit up a lot or have diarrhea-may have a milk/protein sensitivity and could benefit from a hypoallergenic formula like alimentum or nutramigen, even neocate. If none of the mesds work and you formula feed and can't find one that helps, maybe needs more testing, an endoscopy? I hope he feels better soon!

I find that kind of weird that the Ped prescribed that med. It's pretty scary that it is used for muscle spasiticity and they didnt diagnose anything like this. Some kids who have GERD also get this disease called Sandifers Syndrome which causes spasm like symptoms, but it is usually not treated, as it goes away when GERD does. I would ask your Ped why he/she precribed this med to your baby... as u do not understand what it is for, definitely before giving it to him. He seems to be on all the meds pretty much possible for GERD, reglan for motility, prevacid, stops acid and zantac, neutralizes acid. Usually babies should just be on both zantac and prevacid until the prevacid kicks in. I would definitely suggest trying to get in with a pedi GI soon. Good luck and God bless you!

hi He's been on the omeprozol- prevacid for 9 weeks, the metloclopromide for 10 weeks He has had milk intolerance tests also he was put on neocate which made him worse. No he doesn't have epilepsy he doesn't spit it up he throws it up with force This is from a ped gastro team rather than just a paediatric consultant

So, do you have any idea why they prescribed the baclofen? If not I hope they will explain it to you. I just don't understand why the baby needs a muscle relaxer. Good luck and God bless.

I think the idea is that it will relax the muscle at the bottom of his stomach so that the food clears quicker! Although all it seems to do at the mo is send him to sleep

I am wondering whether it is being used to empty stomach contents faster....I can't say for sure...I know they sometimes use some antibiotics to help with delayed gastric emptying....maybe a pager volunteer might have more info on this. In any event, I would contact your physician and find out why this med before giving it.

I remember after a wreck with my 1st baby, they would not give me a muscle relaxer bc I was breastfeeding. You have to trust drs, but I'd ask questions.

There is a article on our home page about using Baclofen as a motility medication http://www.reflux.org/reflux/webdoc01.nsf/(vwWebPage)/Baclofen6705.htmRevision?OpenDocument

Well, I guess we should look at this site before we go other places! There it was right there on the home page! HaHa If you're comfortable doing a "trial" thing and you trust your doctor, the baclofen may be a wonderful option. I guess we get defensive and forget our doctors are the ones that went to med school!! Good luck and God bless!

If the abclofen does not work for you maybe it's time for an endoscopy... I'm sorry for your little one, I will keep him in my prayers.

Very interesting! I guess this is a new med being prescribed for GERD. I hope it helps your baby. It's just a little scary how many meds he's on at such a young age. Both Reglan and Baclofen, and then both Prilosec and Zantac. Best of luck to you and your lo!
