| Correct Zantac dosage I'm not sure if my my 3-month-old son is getting the correct dosage of Zantac. He started on it about 3-4 weeks ago. For the first couple of weeks it worked like a charm; and I was amazed how well he was sleeping. Then the medicine seemed to have stopped working. I read on this website that as the baby's weight increases the dosage should be increased too. So I asked the doctor about this. So she said to increase his dosage to 1.0ml. I give him 1.1ml because he hates the taste of the medicine so much that he spits out a little. The doctor also recommended giving him Extra Strength Maalox. So I give 2.0ml of that too as per her directions. It seemed to work but never as well as the beginning when he first started on Zantac. I read on a drug website that antacids shouldn't be mixed with Zantac so I stopped the Maalox yesterday. Today he hasn't been doing so well. He's been crying while eating and getting him to sleep has been a problem. Does anyone know how much the Zantac dosage for a 14.6 pound baby should be? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm started to get frustrated by all this. So your input would be helpful. | Mar 02, 2006 chris
| new med? What if you either increased the zantac again or tried a different medicine? Maybe its possible that the zantac just won't work because of the type of medicine it is, H2 blocker. These type of meds just reduce the acid, maybe a switch to a PPI drug (like prevacid, nexium) would be better since these actually prevent the acid being produced?
And I know the flavor is horrible so you may ask if they can flavor it to try and offset the taste. | Mar 02, 2006 laura pgh My DS was a silent refluxer. | Keep calling back to your PED they should know that the combo is not working and give you another course of action or increase again. My DS did well on Zantac, and it was 3 x day and it was increased occasionally as he grew, because Zantac is weight sensitive. Our experience was that the dose was about 0.1 ml, 3 x day (the liquid) for each 1 lb of weight, i.e. 14 lbs would have been dosage of 1.4 ml 3 x day. I think at one increase the PED went to 1.7 mL when he was weighing about 15 lbs. That being said, each baby is different and as explained above, there are other types of meds that could be more effective. It is important to keep calling PED until the result is positive. Even then, there are changes and as you found, something that works may not work as well as baby grows, so you have to keep following up. |
