Feb 06, 2006 mwrb Baby w/severe reflux! | Reglan side effect.... Does anyone know if a side effect of Reglan is tongue hanging out of mouth? And how soon after being on Reglan do side effects take place? They do go away- right? Thanks for any insight..... | Feb 07, 2006 lansima Marsha Son Logan Born 7-2003 with EA/TEF | Motility Meds Descriptions Reglan■ - U.S. /Maxeran■ Canada (Metoclopramide)
This drug is a dopamine antagonist which is beneficial in the GI tract where dopamine inhibits motility. It stimulates and coordinates esophageal (esophagus), gastric (stomach), pyloric (valve between the stomach and small intestine), and duodenal (small intestine) peristalsis. Peristalsis refers to the smooth, rhythmic muscle contractions that cause food to pass through the digestive tract. It also works to increase lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tone and stimulates gastric contractions. Unfortunately, metoclopramide crosses the blood-brain barrier which can cause negative (and if not discontinued-possibly irreversible) side effects such as involuntary muscle spasms, motor restlessness, and inappropriate aggression. These side effects are more common in long term use (12 or more months).
Motilium■ - (Domperidone) - Currently not available in the U.S.
This is also a dopamine antagonist; however, domperidone does not cross the blood-brain barrier so it does not have the undesirable side effects that metoclopramide may. It works to increase esophageal peristalsis, LES pressure and gastric contractions.
Erythromycin - An antibiotic with the side effect of increasing gastric motility. This is currently being widely used in low doses (not the higher antibiotic doses) for delayed gastric emptying as this does not have the unfortunate side effects that are possible with metoclopramide.

My point being that if you are worried about the side effects, you could also try Erthromycin (explained at the bottom of the post) | Feb 07, 2006 lansima Marsha Son Logan Born 7-2003 with EA/TEF | Call your doctor immediately if you experience uncontrollable movements or muscle spasms of your arms, legs, lips, jaw, tongue, face, or other body part; or if you experience unexplained anxiety, agitation, jitteriness, shortness of breath, or insomnia. These symptoms could be early signs of a serious side effect requiring immediate treatment. | Feb 07, 2006 lansima Marsha Son Logan Born 7-2003 with EA/TEF | Allergic reaction: swelling tongue? ■ Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome. | Feb 07, 2006 mwrb Baby w/severe reflux! | The reason I posted this question.... is because back when Ryleigh was on Reglan- she ALWAYS had her tongue HANGING out of her mouth! It just hung there. Some people thought it was funny, but now that I look back and think about it- I wonder if that could have been a possible side-effect of Reglan. Ryleigh wasn't on the Reglan for very long. Only about a month or a little longer. I didn't know if that could have been caused by the Reglan or if it was just her doing 'something' with her tongue. She no longer does it, so I wonder if that was associated with the Reglan or not? Thanks Marsha for the info!!!! Traci | Feb 07, 2006 sue d Sue | My 6.5 month old daughter often has her tongue hanging out of her mouth and she is not on and has never been on reglan. I have asked lots of other people about it, they said they've all seen lots of kids who do that.... strange habit type thing. | Feb 09, 2006 beth anderson PAGER Director and original GERD Nerd Mother of Chris (1988) and Katie (1990) Author of The Reflux Book Member of PAGER since 1992 Donor since 1992 | Do NOT stop Reglan on your own!! Do NOT stop Reglan on your own......... This can make the situation worse and cause a crisis. Coming off reglan quickly can make the side effects get out of control..... You can read all about the reglan side effects in the reading room. There is a peer reviewed article that I wrote with a friend. It was published in a gastroenterology journal and they gave us special permission to post it on our web site................... Go to the Advanced Topics section of the reading room and look for the article on Tardive Dyskinesia. |
