Low dose anti-depressants used to treat GI problems?
Has anyone had experience with the use of nortryptoline post fundo? It is used to relax the gi tract- to treat wretching or cramping, etc. post fundo. My daughter started it last night and just in 24 hours I have seen a marked improvement, although I am not sure whether or not the med works that fast or not. Any info or experience shared is appreciated. I am naturally uncomfortable with the thought of an antidepressant in my almost 3 year old, but I also don't like the pain she has had and love that it seems to be taking it away. Thanks, Carla

Anti depressent Use
Hi Carla ! My little one has been on Elival all the way up to prozac, to Seroquel, and theraputic doses of Tylenol w/ Codine, all have been prescribed by his GI Dr. all for the chance to help calm down the entire GI tract. We have always found some great inital relief for him in these medications. But, our fear of keeping him on them for long periods of time always has prevailed and we take him of them after a few months. It's amazing to see how the Body is entirley involved when it comes to the GI tract. We always say our DS has such bad GI problems because he has bad nerves.

Medications for pain
My son took Elavil (Amitriptyline) but now takes Neurontin to help with neuropathic pain. It has definitely helped him a lot. He has had multiple surgeries and without meds, he has pain when his stomach has food in it which causes him to vomit. However, with the Neurontin, he does not vomit and feels tons better. It took a while to find the right dose for him but it was well worth it.

dramatic improvement with nortryptoline
My daughter has been on the nortryptoline for a week now and the differences are amazing. She eats a ton now (!) and doesn't get any stomach aches and it doesn't come straight out. It's like she is almost normal with this med. Whatever concerns I had are at least for now outweighed by the fact that it is working so well. Thanks for your responses!

Melanie
We have used Elavil.
My son has been on elavil now for over two years to help with chronic pain and retching. I know for him it was not a cure all but did help with some of the pain. We found this out when we stopped it and his pain increased, but overall it never took the pain completely away. I do wish you luck and hope that this works for you. Melanie.
